Forestry & Timber Division

Hardwood sleepers for rail, mining, and heavy infrastructure.

We supply sustainably sourced Erythrophleum SPP (Missanda) hardwood sleepers. Available as virgin timber or creosote-treated for open tracks, bridges, turnouts, and underground structural support.

Supply Capabilities

SABS & AWPA Compliant Processed and treated to meet standard railway operational requirements and glossary definitions.
Creosoted Timber Pressure-treated hardwood built to withstand severe environmental exposure and retain coach screws securely.
Sustainable Harvesting All timber comes with certification from the Department of Forestry confirming country of origin and strict forest revitalization programs.

Erythrophleum SPP (Messanda / Missanda).

Sisanda Agric restricts sleeper manufacturing exclusively to high-density African hardwood species. Over the years, we have established solid relationships with timber farmers locally and internationally to secure sustainable volumes of Messanda/Missanda hardwood.

This specific species provides the necessary bending, shear, and compressive strength required to distribute forces exerted from the rail directly into the track substructure.

Heavy-duty operational thresholds.

In the normal functioning of a rail track, a sleeper must retain strength properties over its expected lifespan. Our sleepers are engineered to maintain an effective bearing surface, holding rails securely to maintain gauge and inclination.

Lifespan 25 Years Expected service life in open track environments.
Capacity 30 Tons Maximum axle load rating per sleeper.
Thermal -10°C to 50°C Ambient operating temperature range.
Static Load 80kN Maximum static lateral load capacity.
Dynamic Load 60kN Maximum dynamic lateral load capacity.
Speed Rating 100km/h Maximum operational rail traffic speed.

Choose the right timber finish.

We supply both untreated stock for custom infrastructure applications and fully treated sleepers for immediate railway deployment.

Treated (Creosoted) Sleepers

Hardwood pressure-treated with creosote to SANS/AWPA standards, providing maximum resistance to moisture, rot, and ground contact deterioration.

Immediate deployment for open line tracks Used for turnout sleepers (switch ties) Steel-decked bridge sleeper applications

Virgin Hardwood Sleepers

Raw, high-density untreated hardwood supplied for projects that manage their own treatment or require pure structural timber strength.

Maximum raw pull-out strength for coach screws Custom underground mining support Landscaping and architectural structural use

Standard dimensions & tolerances.

Our hardwood sleepers are cut to precise SABS tolerances to support standard open track, turnout crossings, and steel-decked bridges.

Documentation & Certification

Every batch of Sisanda sleepers is accompanied by certification from the Department of Forestry stating the country of origin, harvesting management, and forest revitalization programs followed to prevent exploitation of the species.
